Introduction:

In Ghouls and Ghosts, the Princess was captured by the evil Loki. King Arthur rescued her and destroyed Loki. A huge celebration took place as King Arthur returned home with the princess. But as the party died down, and Arthur and the Princess went into the castle, several Demons plotted to take the princess... Just as the King and Princess entered the Throne Room, a Demon broke through the glass window and kidnapped the princess...
Super Ghouls and Ghosts is about Arthur's quest to save the princess, although it has almost no ties to the "King Arthur" legend!
Super Ghouls and Ghosts is a 2-D Side-scrolling Action game. It's only 1-Player.
Graphics [6/10]:
The Graphics for Super Ghouls and Ghosts are only slightly above average. It's a typical 2-D Side Scroller. In fact the graphics did little to improve over this game's Sega Master System version (8-bit machine)The Enemies have some detail to them, but only what is needed. Arthur hasn't barely changed from the 8-bit game.
The numerous weapons Arthur can use, are nice looking, but they have no detail, or imagination put into them.
The backgrounds are the best graphical acheivments in this game, there's several 'layers' that seem to go 'out' very far in the game.
In the game's defense though, It does have a large variety of enemies, and the levels do vary greatly from one another. Unfortunately there's a considerable amount of slow down if more than five or six enemies/projectiles come onto the screen at once.
Music and Sound [6/10]:
The music is reminiscent of the original game. It does have it's own unique tracks though. The music isn't too special, but it's not annoying and most of it sounds nice. Bottom line is that it isn't a master piece, but it sounds like there was some thought put into it. :)
The sound in this game is like the sound of most Side- Scrollers. It has "clinks" and "clanks", explosion sounds and some foot steps. Sound FX aren't wonderful, although I did find the foot steps pretty nice...
Game Play [6/10]:
As I said before, the game is a Side-Scroller. But as with every game should...it has a couple unique features that only appear on it.
Basically you go through level after level, avoiding traps, making impossible jumps, and destroying enemies.
But you can also find hidden treasured chests, that contain armor and weapons. (Among other surprises)
You battle through several types of levels, a grave yard (Complete with reappearing zombies.), an inferno, a ghost ship, and ton more!
The games controls are pretty good, but at times it is a little sluggish.
It sounds easy..but read on.....
Challenge and Replay [9/10]:
Super Ghouls and Ghosts is one of the hardest (Beatable) games I've ever played. So much goes on at a time, you can easily die. There's Zombies coming after you, while the ground crumbles into an abyss, meanwhile a creature throws fireballs at you, and a wolf pounces on you. Not mention the several weapons you need to master, or else.... One mistake in this game and your dead! It's a very hard game even on the 'Beginner' setting... (Not to mention the three other settings)
Unfortunately there is no save feature or password system, but there is a code that will allow you to go to the first half and the end of the game!
But there's an average Replay value on this game. I won't play it right after it's beaten..but in a couple months..I'll probably pop it into my SNES.
Conclusion/Overall [6.7/10]
Super Ghouls and Ghosts is an average Side-Scroller. It has imaginative levels but no substance to the Game Play. The Sound is mediocre, along with the music. And the Graphics are only slightly improved over it's 8-bit counter-part.
I only suggest this game to people like me, who enjoy a tough, but beatable game. Or anyone who loved the 8-bit version.
