Introduction:
Rock N' Roll Racing is the most popular racing event across the galaxy. This game takes place in the future on different planets. You must pick one of six Rock N' Roll Racing heroes and try to win back the Indinapolis Super Cup. J.B. Slash on planet Inferno has been the Rock N' Roll Racing champion for several years now. You can only challenge him if you set the game on Warrior difficulty level and beat every other character on their planets first.
Graphics [7.5/10]:
This game has pretty good graphics, but they are not spectacular, and there are not many special effects. The backgrounds for all the planets while you are on the racetrack are quite good, but you won't notice it much while you are concentrating on the race. The cars themselves look pretty neat, expecially the Marauder. The faces of all the characters are pretty good to. Also, this game does have explosions when a car blows up, and you can even see little parts fly everywhere. That about sums it up for this game's graphics.
Music and Sound [9.5/10]:
The songs on this game are actual popular classic rock n' roll songs like "Bad to the Bone" and "Born to be Wild". There are only five songs in all, which can get kind of tedious after awhile. However, they are good songs, and it's good to hear some classic rock n' roll again. Most of the rating in this department goes to the sound thanks to the voice of Larry "Supermouth" Huffman. He makes all sorts of comments during the race, which gives this game alot of spice. For example, when you wipe out, you hear the Supermouth say "Holy Toleto!", or "WOAH!". It's also funny when he mocks the last place car by saying "(Name of Character) looks lost out there!." If nothing else, you gotta play this game to hear all the comments.
Gameplay [8.5/10]:
This game runs in an overhead fashion much like R.C. Pro Am on the regular NES. This game allows you to buy weapons like missiles to blow up cars in front, and mines to blow up cars behind you. You can also buy better armor for your car, better tires, better shocks, and upgrade your engine. For the later cars, you only have to upgrade your engine and armor. There are five cars to choose from. They are: The Dirt Devil, The Marauder, The Air Blade, The Battle Trak, and The Havac. You get to choose between the Dirt Devil and the Marauder at the start of the game. The Dirt Devil is better on hills and corners, but the Marauder is faster. The six heroes you get to choose from have different skills. The skills are: acceleration, top speed, jumping, and cornering. The game is fun to play. You can choose 1 or 2 players and can even play the normal game, where you have to buy upgrades and earn points to advance to planets, or you can play the v.s. mode where you have all upgrades and can play any planet except Inferno. The v.s. mode is good for just blowing up the other cars, as you don't need to worry about points to qualify for the next planet. The three difficulty settings give this game plenty of challenge for any player. The Rookie setting is good for beginners, the Veteran is a little harder, and Warrior is for hardcore Rock N' Roll racers. You can easily tell the difference between the three difficulty settings on this game. You need to set it on Warrior to race J.B. Slash on Inferno and truly win the game though.
Challenge and Replay [9/10]:
The three difficulty settings mentioned are what gives this game it's replay value. You can only race on the first three planets on Rookie, and can only race up to the ice world on Veteran, and must set it on Warrior to race on the last planet. On the harder settings, the computer players use more weapons and drive faster. You will have to use some strategy to beat them. However, most of the game's difficulty is memorizing hazards on the track. Once you get the previous skill mastered, this game shouldn't be too hard. I have beaten this game, once I could memorize the tracks, it wasn't too hard to beat. When you beat this game in the normal mode, it is fun to play on v.s. mode and blow the snot out of your opponents.
Conclusion/Overall [9/10]:
I like this game alot because it is fun to play, and I like listening to the classic rock n' roll songs along with the comments of Larry Huffman. This game may take some time to get the control down, but once you do this, it is a great game to play. The two player split screen can make things look scrunched, but it's not too bad. This game is fun for 1 or 2 players, but for 2 players, I recommend the v.s. mode because of the automatic power up feature. In the v.s. mode, you can also go to the ice planet, buy the best car in the game(the havac), and go back to an easy planet and kick butt. Buying better cars is also free, so I use the trick mentioned previously often.
