Introduction:
This game is an instant classic, and it is sometimes considered the next best
thing to a Mario game. Don't be misled by the Disney name because this was made
by one of our favorite video game companies, Capcom who is known for such greats
like the Street Fighter Series, Mega Man, Ghouls N' Ghost, and Resident Evil.
Magical Quest: staring Mickey Mouse is, of course, a game with Disney's most
famous mascot and many other familiar faces like Goofy, Donald Duck, Pluto, and
the big bad guy- Emperor Pete. Goofy decides to play ball with Pluto and Goofy
ends up losing him. As a result, Mickey has to go after him through an
incredible and perilous adventure.
Graphics [9.5/10]:
The graphics in this game are just gorgeous, and no platform game looked better
than this one when it was released. In the first few levels, you are surrounded
by vines and clouds. Later, you well encounter a beaver dam. The next levels
consist of large woods which will require decent jumping skills and proper
timing. The third world is really cool, because you are surrounded by fire
everywhere and the flame effects are interesting to watch. There can't be a
fire world without an ice world, right? The snow level is sooo cold, it will
make you want to get a nice hot cup of Chocolate with marshmallows. One of the
last levels is a mountain area with some very forceful winds. In the last level,
you will have to survive Emperor Pete's Castle. All of the characters are very
well animated and this is one of the best animated games that the SNES had
before Donkey Kong Country.
Music and Sound [9/10]:
The music is good, and there is a different theme song for each level. Capcom
knows how to make good "game soundtracks". I only wish they wish they would
have made the boss theme songs have a more threatening and eerie sound. The
sound effects are used well throughout the game, and they are equally as good as
the music.
Game Play [9/10]:
The play control in this game is really good. So good, that it seems like a
Nintendo made game. There is nothing more cool than being given the ability to
change outfits and weapons (sort of like a RPG). As you progress, you are given
different outfits, and you can change into any of the outfits during the game
instead of being limited to one outfit in every level. The outfits consist of a
normal Mickey Mouse, a Magical Mickey with...well.. magic, a Fireman Mickey with
a powerful water hose, and a Mountain Climber Mickey with mountain gear.
Challenge and Replay [9/10]:
The first two levels of this game are a breeze, but after that, it starts to
really test your skills. The bosses begin to get more complex and they are no
longer a 'cake walk'. The replay value is good because the game has three
levels of difficulty (easy, normal, and hard). Instead of just making the
enemies more difficult, some new and more challenging enemies will appear that
were not in the easy mode.
Overall/Conclusion [9/10]:
Anyone that has a home for Mario, needs to make a room for Mickey too. Don't
let the cutesy look fool you. This game provides plenty of challenge and fun.
It is doubtful that a person will be aggravated with this game for cheap AI
because it is a well balanced game with solid play control.
