Introduction:
An ancient civilization, once produced amazing break-throughs in
science and biology. This knowledge was used to create plants and
animals, to better the life on Earth. But as everything is...this
knowledge was curruptable. People began creating horrid beasts, with a
taste for war, and a perverse intellegence. The world began to
crumble, and a glorious battle between the 'Knights of Light', and the
'Knights of Darkness' took place. After a long and strenuos battle,
with no end in site, the 'Chaos Comet' was constructed. This powerful
weapon was meant to end the war and bring peace to the Earth... but it
ended up all but destory the 'Knights of Light and Darkness'. The
comet twisted and mutalated, many of the people and animals on earth.
The Comet returns every hundred years, to bring disease and death to
earth...
The Story begins in Cape Side, a small town where the main character
of the story, Will, lives. Will, went with his father one year ago, to
the Tower of Babel(I'll get into this at the conclusion). He has no
memory of the tower, and his father hasn't been seen since...
Illusion of Gaia is a 1-Player Action/RPG. It uses 'real time', rather
than the menu system, for battles.
Graphics [8/10]:
There is only one view in Illusion of Gaia. There's an over head
view...similiar to Chrono Trigger. In fact the graphics on Chrono
Trigger look as though, they were inspired by this game. The
characters are fairly well drawn and designed. Some of their movement
looks unnatural and stiff, but the characters still look well animated.
The Enemies vary greatly. Some look like they were recycled from older
video games..while others look as though they were put together over
months of hard work. Enemies also can look either realistic and almost
demonic looking, to cartoony and funny.
The backgrounds are detailed with different shades of colors, and
textures, to give the feel of a level. There is also a great amount of
new and original backgrounds in Illusions of Gaia.
Music and Sound [8/10]:
Like most RPG's, Illusions of Gaia has pretty good music. Although
some of the music gets a little repeatative and dull, most of the
music is good.
The Sound falls under the same Catagory. It's good, but there isn't
enough variety to it.
All-in-all the music and sound are good, but they don't meet the high
standards for SNES RPGs.
Game Play [9/10]:
Up until recnetly, I've only heard bad things about this game. But
this is a really good RPG/Action game.
You can only play as one of three characters at a time.
The battles are in real time, there's no menues or timed attacks in
Illusions of Gaia. Experiece is also done differently. You gain XP by
clear a board of all it's enemies. You don't get any XP for every
monster, and foe you beat. You upgrade one of three types of
catagories, Defence, Strength or Health. There really isn't magic in
IoG. But it's still a fun game.
The Story line is exellent, but it may annoy (That's not the word I
want to use) a ton of people...but I'll get to that at the conclussion.
The game play will have you on the edge of your seat, as you
interacte, fight, or negotiate with other people.
Challenge and Replay [7/10]:
The difficuly is very unbalanced. For the most part, the game is
rather easy. But some of the bosses, and levels are extremly hard.
While this may not bother some, others might find this very annoying.
A game should stick with a certain difficulty, not waver around as
much as this one does.
There are a couple things that I'll want to go back to in Illusion of
Gaia. There's Fifty hidden Red Jewels in the game, for Will to
find...If you find all Fifty you get a surprise :) Also going back
through the game will help clarify the good, but sometimes confusing
storyline. But it won't be the same the second time around.
Conclusion/Overall [8/10]:
Illusion of Gaia is a fun RPG. The Sound and Music are ok..and so are
the graphics. But the Game Play is really fun, and enjoyable.
Now to the story line....
You may or may not know, but Nintendo has a strict 'No Religion' rule
in any game they produce. However they do not reconize Animism,
Atheism, or Paganism as religions. In Illusions of Gaia, Nintendo
steals many ideas and names from several religions, mainly Judism, and
Christianity. But then..they convert them into Pagan and Atheistic
ideals. (For Example: The Tower of Babel was, according to IoG,
destroyed by gods and not God) This is probably the one main reason
Nintendo never Re-released it as a 'Players Choice' game. But be
warned..there is a few down right insensitive points in the game that
don't need to be there. Nintendo Could have come up with some other
name..or found another legend to use.
