Introduction:
The Focus Tower is the center of the world. It has been protecting the
world for years. But four monsters stole the four crystals: Fire, Air,
Water, Earth. The monsters began wrecking havok on the lands. In steps
you..or rather Benjamin the young hero of the game (You can change his
name if you wish)
Final Fantasy:Mystic Quest (FF:MQ) isn't a true sequel to the popular
Final Fantasy series. Rather, it's more of a spin-off of the series.
It was designed for younger or less experienced players. The idea was
to get another crowd hooked onto the RPG genere (Type of game).
Although I'm a very experienced RPGer I found this game to be pretty
fun!
Graphics [7/10]:
FF:MQ isn't the graphical marvel of its 'cousins' FF2, and FF3. There
is a good effort put here though. The graphics are a tiny bit step
down from FF2. Although it does have some nice design.
The backrounds, and building, have a lot of detail for an older game.
The magic spells are nicly done, but they aren't very spectacular. The
levels of the world themselves, have lots of variety, and imagination.
The graphics weren't used over too much in this game. i.e. "Haven't I
seen that same room five times before?" The designers made it so that
when you explore an area you don't get feelings of Deja-vu...(Been
there done that).
Music and Sound [6/10]:
The music sounds bitty, or choppy. Besides that, though, it's tough
music to get out of your head. I hum the simple, but nicely composed,
tunes every so often. The music changes with the battles, and the area
of the world your in. So the music never really becomes boring or
repeatative.
There is only so much the designers can do with the Sound Effects in a
game like this. There are different sounds for some of the weapons.
And the spells are all a variation of each other. The Sound FX aren't
great but they're good. That's what matters!
Bottom line is that the music is a bit disappointing compared to other
Square-Soft(Company) works.
Game Play [9/10]:
This game is so fun. It's easy, but fun. The game was made to give
beginers the guide-lines to RPGs, and some challenge. Every
semi-experienced RPGer I know, who's played this game finds it very
fun. There's enough challenge in the game, so that it doesn't become
boring and mechanical, but it's easy enough so that you don't go crazy
trying to do certain tasks.
There's only a few Power-Ups, and items, swords and spells. That's a
bit of a downer, but you have to remember who this was made for. The
Level-ups are also toned down..but despite all of that the game is so
much fun to play. You can have up to two people in your party at a
time. Characters join and leave Benjamin throughout the game. You'll
meet many characters with many abilities.
Challenge and Replay [6/10]:
Not much in the way of challenge. There are very few secrets in the
game. (Hint: Beat all the battlefeilds, get hidden items, and you'll
get a better ending) If you rush through the game, you can beat it in
about half an hour. Take your time, and it'll take an hour and a half.
For the experienced gamer. But don't worry about how long it takes
you, it's about fun..Remember?
Because the game is so easily beat, some might think this game has no
replay value. That is so wrong. I found that this is the perfect game
to kill some time. You can play for a short while and still beat it.
It's doesn't feel repeatative. Even when you've played it ten times!
Conclussion/Overall [7/10]:
Although it was made for 'younger' gamers, it still has an interesting
storyline, and even more fun Game Play. It's refreshing to find an RPG
that is never a mind boogler, or a seemingly impossible feat. FF:MQ is
the perfect game for anyone who doesn't have a lot of time on their
hands, or is just starting out on video games..RPG's to be more
specific. Not the greatest game, but a pretty good one.
